Chronic pain & symptoms
Mind-body therapy for chronic pain and fatigue: beyond “it's all in your head”
6 min read
If you live with chronic pain or exhaustion, you've probably been told some version of “it's stress” in a way that felt like being dismissed. Let's be really clear: your symptoms are real.
Mind-body work doesn't say the pain is imaginary. It says your nervous system is part of the picture, and that part is workable.
Pain is produced, not just detected
Your body isn't a pain meter with a wire running to your brain. Your brain is constantly deciding how much protection a situation needs, using signals from your tissues plus everything else: how safe you feel, how tired you are, how much is riding on tomorrow.
That's why the same back behaves differently on a calm Sunday and the morning of a big meeting. Nothing structural changed. The threat calculation did.
The second layer: everything that happens around symptoms
Living with symptoms is stressful on its own. Then there's the whole operation around them.
- Scanning your body constantly for whether today is a bad day
- Pushing through, then paying for it for three days
- Negotiating with yourself about whether you're allowed to rest
- Getting quietly furious with your own body
- Bracing for a flare before it's even here
All of that keeps your system in protection mode, which is exactly the state that turns the volume up. It's a loop, and the loop is a legitimate target.
What we actually do
We work with the sensation itself rather than fighting it: how it behaves, where it has edges, what happens when you bring attention towards it instead of clamping down. We work with the bracing, the pushing, the frustration. And we build capacity so your body spends less of the day on high alert.
For some people this means symptoms become much easier to manage. For others, symptoms reduce significantly, and in some cases resolve over time. I won't promise you an outcome, because there are many reasons symptoms happen.
This works alongside your medical care
Keep your doctors. Keep investigating. Nothing here replaces appropriate medical care, and I will never advise you to stop treatment. We're working with the part your nervous system, stress response and learned patterns may be playing — which is often the part nobody has offered you any help with.
